Questions And Answers On Cable Television Alternatives

Jim asks…

Alternative to cable television?

Now that television broadcasting is switching to High Definition, are there any alternatives to cable?

thrash44 answers:

Television broadcasting is going digital, albeit HD.
They will continue to provide SD for cable, or on broadcast TV.

If it is your cable provider that is going digital (it is them not its stations doing that, unlike broadcast, where it is the stations going digital,) or more accurately turning off analog channels requiring a box, there is nothing else you can switch to that does not require a box, unless you want to get an antenna and a digital capable TV set.

Digital cable, Satellite, IPTV, and FIOS all require a box.

Charlie asks…

Television antennas:— I am cancelling cable. Any alternatives? Not satelite!?

thrash44 answers:

This is a great source for antennas. This forum is dedicated to the latest indoor and outdoor antennas and much much more!

Marie asks…

Will broadcast television eventually dominate over cable again in the near future?

More than 90% of Americans have pay-TV of some sort, and a recent report states that more than half of the 18-49 audience watch cable. However, I heard that many subscribers are cutting cable access and moving into other alternatives (ex. internet) due to high costs.

But to be honest, broadcast television (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, The CW) has been the cream of the audience crop for decades and I really, really hate to see it die a slow death, so my question is, will broadcast TV eventually dominate the audience landscape again, just like it did a decade ago?

thrash44 answers:

It still dominates in terms of number of viewers. Just because someone subscribes to cable does not mean they aren’t watching NBC. Look at the Nielson ratings and you’ll see broadcast shows rule most ratings.

admin answers:

The site you refer to only have stored images of earth….
Because there are clouds that would normally block your view, they only took pictures on certain days that that had no clouds….and this was a long process. You arent going to find a site with a live satellite image of your house……

Satellites cost hundreds of millions of dollars, theres no way your going to find one that says, hay, I spent almost a billion dollars on a satellite, and now I decided to let the general public use it!

Questions And Answers On Satellite Radio

Caroline asks…

Satellite radio?

I am about to buy Satellite radio and I was trying to decide between XM and Sirus I like Baseball and most other sports. Any suggestions as to which one is better it would be appreciated.Thanks.

admin answers:

I use Sirius; I think both services are about the same, with each having some exclusive content. If the NFL or Howard Stern is attractive to you, Sirius is the way to go since those are only in Sirius. I don’t know much about XM and what their exclusive content is. I suspect on the music side they probably have similar content. I think pricing is similar, too.

Elizabeth asks…

Satellite Radio?

Can anyone tell me which satellite radio is cheaper? shoud i go with XM or Sirius? i know which brand has the affordable radio but i just need princing on it monthly plans….Thanx

admin answers:

I know Sirius is 12.95 / month and I think XM is about the same. Depends on what you like. I love Howard Stern and NFL so I went with Sirius. If you don’t care for Howard and like baseball more than football then XM is your cup of tea. IMO, the music stations on XM are just slightly better than Sirius music channels, but Sirius is catching up.

These two companies may or may not merge in the near future so you might not have a choice. Pay attention to the details of this proposed merger, because if the companies do merge you might have to buy new equipment, so it might pay to wait.

Paul asks…

satellite radio?

i want to purchase satellite radio for my husband for a christmas present…i know nothing about them …any info, suggestions, pros and cons would be great. thanks in advance

admin answers:

Just go to Best Buy or Circuit City or some local electronics store, and they’ll help you out. All you need is a satellite receiver…and you have to pay a monthly fee. The receiver, or some sort of antenna connected to the receiver, must be able to view the sky unobsructed. So, a system for you home will likely be different that a system for you car.

Lynn asks…

Can I get a DVR that will record multiple broadcast television channels?

I need to record 2 shows that are on at the same time on broadcast television. I’m not talking about cable or satellite. I’m talking the plain and simple, rabbit ears antenna, digital broadcast television. Is there a DVR that can do this?

admin answers:

Sure there is.

Mandy asks…

Will getting a digital converter box help me receive more HD local channels?

I just recently purchased a 40″ HD television and I do have digital cable but I really don’t want to pay right now for the upgrade to HD Cable since not many channels are offered by my carrier. I cannot get satellite where I am at so that is out of the question but I can receive 2 HD locals but the two others I cannot receive. Will getting one of the Digital Converter boxes help me boost my signal reception or should I just invest in a better antenna?

admin answers:

It is possible that the converter box has a better HD tuner than the TV, but you would be better off getting a better antenna. Go to this site:

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx

enter your zip code and see what kind of antenna they recommend to get the stations you want.

Besides, if you get a coupon-eligible converter box, that will not give you HDTV. (They do not have component or HDMI outputs.)
